An all-time favorite wine human, a whole bunch of local events, CDMX recs, and a few nice tunes..
Wine
There are some wines that I come across that are so full of energy and life that they remind me of why I fell in love with wine in the first place. This is the feeling I get whenever I get to open a bottle of L’Ange Vin by Jean Pierre Robinot.
One of the early champions of natural wine in Paris, Jean Pierre opened a bar in the late 80’s called L’Ange Vin and later started the magazine, Le Rouge et Le Blanc. By the early 2000’s, in his fifties, he moved back home to the Loire Valley to pursue winemaking because the only way to learn more about natural wine was to make it himself! He began with 2 hectares and is now up to 10, growing only Chenin Blanc and Pineau d’Aunis.
I had the extreme pleasure of visiting him after running into my friend Juliette (his daughter) in Paris, and being invited to come out for a day. It was a highlight of my wine life to say the least. Jean Pierre doesn’t speak any English, but his energy and enthusiasm not only overcomes the language barrier, but shows through in every bottle of his wine. The experience of touring the caves, tasting through older bottles, tasting and out of barrels will always stand alone for me no matter where I may get to visit in the future. He is a special human, and I am always honored to represent his wines in the shop. We have a few bottles still left on the shelf!
